Verrucas or warts are caused by a human papilomavirus, of which there are many variants. The virus is contageous, and is transmitted through direct contact or via floors - often in communal changing areas. Minor injury to the skin will increase the risk of infection. Although the virus thrives on the palm type skin of the hands and feet it may be found on other parts of the body.
Verrucae usually take 2/3 weeks to incubate. Initially they look innocuous, tiny circles on the skin. As they grow appear as 'cauliflower' like, often with black specks, are usually round, and often raised. They vary in size, and can grow to 4/5 cms in diameter. Mostly, verrucas are not painful, unless they are pinched. Unless it is causing pain then treatment is not actually necessary. Most verrrucas (65%) in adults will resolve by themselves in 5 years; and in about 1 year with children.
Treatment

If you do nothing else then keep it covered with tape or plasters. Early treatments are recommended to achieve a quick resolution.
The application of caustics, or cryotherapy (freezing) are the most commonly employed treatment modalities. Homeopathic remedies may be of help - for a long term but painless form of treatment. In stubborn cases excision by electro-surgery may be used under local anaesthetic to remove the verruca. Usually the longer a verruca has been present the longer treatment will take!
